Controller

Make budgets, costs and results transparent – so that variances show up early rather than in the year-end accounts.

Why this role exists

As sales, marketing and product work grow, so do spending and responsibilities. For functions to manage their budgets themselves, we need clear cost centres, reliable reports and controlling that supports rather than just checks.

Your outcomes

  • A traceable cost-centre and budget structure.
  • Regular budget and cost reports per function.
  • Early-detected variances with documented causes and actions.
  • Internal controls that are built or developed further, such as approval paths for spending.

Your day and scope

Analysing costs and budgets, aligning with function owners, clarifying variances, working with accounting on the monthly close, maintaining cost centres and approval rules, and supporting FP&A with planning and forecasts.

Boundaries: You own cost and budget controlling and internal controls. Budget authority sits with function owners and leadership; bookkeeping with Accounting.

Your first 90 days

  1. First 30 days

Understand the cost structure, existing budgets, booking logic and approval paths; name first gaps in transparency and controls.

  2. By day 60

Agree a clear cost-centre structure and deliver the first budget reports per function.

  3. By day 90

Run a monthly controlling rhythm, review variances with the functions and have improved at least one control.

What you bring

  • Experience in controlling or a comparable finance role.
  • Good understanding of accounting and cost accounting.
  • Accuracy and confidence with numbers.
  • Ability to discuss variances constructively with functions.

What you can learn with us

  • Our offers and cost drivers.
  • Our specific tool stack.

When this role is less of a fit

You see controlling mainly as top-down control, or want to produce reports without talking to the functions about causes.

Compensation and conditions

We only commit to compensation, contract type, working hours and location once they are approved. We will tell you all of it concretely in the first call, before you invest time in further steps.

Your application process

  1. Short application

Name, email and your answer to the role's entry question. CV optional.

  2. First call

A personal conversation about the role, conditions and your questions. We cover compensation and location concretely here.

  3. Work sample

An announced, time-boxed task: review a fictional budget report, explain the main variances and propose next steps. No real company data, no unpaid work. People assess accuracy, prioritisation and clarity.

  4. Decision

A person decides, never an AI. You always get a response.

Your entry question

„A function exceeds its budget but delivers good results. How do you handle it?“
